Random selection of a db entry without messing up in the least with queries. It only requires $maxNumber does not exceed the available entries. That easy.  
It took me time to free myself of what we read online or on manuals to achieve that!

Immediatamente dico che la sapevo, e che la avevo sempre saputa proprio così come la ho appena sentita. Ne arriva una altra sempre in divisa che mi conferma la versione sbagliata di quella cosa. A questo punto sono fermamente persuaso che l'errore propinatomi sia la versione corretta. Tutto questo perchè non uso mai la mia testa: so bene che non c'è da fidarsene.  
 
Mi è venuto da ripensarci pochi giorni fa: è un esperimento che spiega (o meglio: illustra) anche più di quello che spiega e finanche nelle nostre vite quotidiane. Dai una divisa ad un errore, e troverai seguaci. Le persone non si fidano dei propri ragionamenti, ma si fidano ciecamente di quelli altrui se in divisa. Terrorizzati dalla idea di sbagliare con la propria testa, preferiscono farlo con quella degli altri. Introduci un malcostume, e poi crea un reggimento in divisa che segue quel malcostume: si propagherà con la velocità di un virus, e diventerà una profezia che si autorealizza. Insomma, milioni e milioni di mosche, mica potranno sbagliarsi tutte no?  
Per scongiurare la arroganza che non cede su un punto sbagliato, si affidano alla credulità che cede su un punto sbagliato.  
 
Voltaire scriveva: "cosa c'è di più venerabile che un antico abuso?". La verità si autodefinisce come funzione del numero di seguaci e della loro presunta autorità - quest' ultima intesa come la facoltà di essere ignoranti con autorevolezza.

Fatti, Parole E Catastrofi

Visits: 1,809 Si dice talora che le parole stanno a zero e nulla contano: quel che conta sono solo i fatti.  
 
Vero. Era Platone che (citazione non originalissima) diceva che "le parole dovrebbero essere usate per rivelarsi e non per nascondersi"; per cui se le cose andassero come dovrebbero (e non lo fanno mai) tra parole e fatti non dovrebbe esserci scarto alcuno: dovendo essere la stessa cosa, si potrebbe godere di entrambe.  
 
Ma ai nostri interlocutori piace vivere una vita falsa, quando non mitomaniaca: e il motivo per cui lo fanno è che spesso fingere basta e a loro e agli altri, mentre essere autentici non gli dà alcun vantaggio in più - e quindi si scatenano.  
 
Dimostrare con i fatti che si crede a quel che si dice, porta spesso alla catastrofe.

E' Meraviglioso Essere In Coma: Breve Nota Sul Caso Eluana Englaro

Visits: 2,515 Eluana Englaro * è un caso che ci ha permesso di apprendere molte nuove cose che prima non sapevamo.  
La più importante pare essere questa: che è meraviglioso essere in coma, più dei Negramaro. Una situazione desiderabile: se non proprio auspicabile, quantomeno parificabile a tante altre. Infatti si rammenta che il coma persistente "potrebbe" evolversi in coma vigile: una situazione nella quale, paralizzato del tutto, potresti muovere gli occhi o forse starnutire. Inoltre, si danno alcuni casi su svariate decine di milioni di risvegli; ovviamente noi saremo fra questi, anche perchè sono risvegli di sopraffina qualità: non solo potresti rientrare in coma in qualsiasi momento, ma con facoltà cognitive atrofizzate da danni cerebrali permanenti, ti risvegli e scopri di essere meglio di Hawking.  
 
Che uno possa non essere interessato a vivere come un vegetale nella speranza, dopo magari dieci o venti anni, di risvegliarsi, è ipotesi che non vale. Chi infatti non troverebbe interessante stare in un soggiorno per comatosi, vedere tutti i giorni le volontarie del soccorso che vengono a ridere con te e trattarti come l'ebete che sei per poi raccontare alle amiche quanto loro sono buone e tu speciale... speciale davvero. Ogni tanto magari muovi gli occhi, e questo permetterà ermeneutiche raffinate. E poi, dopo anni di terapia e di parenti e infermieri attorno che ti fanno sentire musica, potresti fare progressi enormi: pensa, dopo 5 o 6 anni potresti non soffocarti più con la tua saliva, e dopo magari dieci anni forse qualcuno ti sentirà scorreggiare.  
 
Peccato che, per quel che riguarda ma, questo tipo di vita meravigliosa e questo tipo di sorti magnifiche e progressive non mi interessano nemmeno per 6 mesi. Perchè io sono cattivo.  
 
Ma se interessano a voi, non vi preoccupate: ditelo, e se finite in uno splendido coma, lotterò per lasciarvi nel vostro splendore senza requie. Come suona: suona bene?

Excellence Becomes Humility

Visits: 2,456 If you lack everything else and you have time for a one-liner only to evaluate a person, remember that you can tell a good programmer, a good teacher, or a good person by this alone: s/he will never correct you. S/he helps you. S/he will never make you feel stupid.  
 
They are beyond, because they never quit staying behind. That is, they never forget when they were the ones who could not understand; walking in a jungle of teachings most of the times written by persons who hadn't to fight their own way in that jungle because they were taught and so produced teachings redundant with lessons not understood and questions not only unanswered but simply never even asked, they fought their own way to understanding by their own hands and means. So they thought of questions no one else thought before, and in the throes of this process their intellect grew different.  
 
So different, that they can exhibit a level of such deep an empathy with a learner, that no other teacher may ever either attain or comprehend. These are persons who, when they explain, do not complain and do not correct: they glide down to your level, on the hands of the angels of their past errors that guide them to fit the learner, and start a relationship with the learner that every professor would scorn: they are companions, brothers in arms - never professors, never saps and plodders, never hair-counters. You will never find them on newsgroups lecturing you.  
 
No good person teaches; or, better, no decent person does it by sermons, but by living examples. They don't place burdens on the shoulders of the others that they themselves would not lift with one finger.  
 
If you want a child to study, shut up, say nothing, forget reprimands: if you want a child to study, just show yourself studying.

Visits: 2,258 When the Caliph decided to destroy the Library Of Alexandria * , it has been reported he yelled:"If these books contain nothing more than that which is written in the book of God (el Koran), they are useless; if they contain anything contrary to the sacred book, they are pernicious; in either case, burn them."This notorious explanation could have been rephrased in its exact contrary, preserving plausibility: if these books contain nothing more than that which is written in the book of God, they can be spared for they say nothing against it and therefore are not pernicious; and if they contain anything contrary to the sacred book, they can be spared as well because either the reasons of our God are stronger already than any book, or they aren't the reasons of God what we are claiming.  
 
The Caliph considered himself pious upon the same grounds that made him blasphemous.  
This might happen also because, if the Gospels say "do unto others as you would have others do unto you", there ought to be an obvious integration to that dictum, namely that we cannot do unto others anything else but what we have already done unto ourselves.  
So, expecting the others not being able to supply us but with what we have supplied ourselves with already, we may be able to inflict unto them only the destruction of culture and humanity we have endured already.  
 
Of course, something altogether different than what the Caliph advocated was sufficient. A splendid silence was never written, but bad prose gets written pretty often. So, I'd prefer being silent rather than contributing something that is not crystal clear to myself in the first place.  
This may not guarantee that our good prose won't be still bad, and yet it may guarantee at least that our worst one isn't be going to be seen and read; it will not rid the world of Caliphs, but it may deprive them of the excuses they needed not to be thugs.

Is he serious? Yes, he is.  
 
What he hadn't the courage of titling "To The Gene Unknown" and yet had the courage of titling "The Selfish Gene", ought to have been titled, judging by what he writes about DNA and genomes: "The Idiotic Gene". In his preposterous presentation, a genome isn't but a pack of fools, an asylum where have been forcibly concentrated a set of madmen whose unique purpose is that of replicating themselves in the wilderness, in something that nonetheless yields an order that shouldn't be there at all if that cacophony ought to be believed (unless Dawkins meant to sponsor miracles, which he doesn't): because if that packed nonsense of genes would have been true, not only we should have a world populated of dysfunctional chimaeras, but we should have no lasting life at all.  
 
If all that science has to say about such deep an issue is to abdicate reason by stating that DNA behaves like DNA because it is DNA and DNA is like that, any scientific pursuit becomes instantly pointless and what triumphs is the "quia in eo est virtuus dormitiva, cuisu propietas est assuopire": "for in it there is a narcotic property whose property is that of making you narcotized"; we don't need anymore scientists or Richard Dawkins: dottor Diafoirus suffices.

Dr House E Grey's Anatomy: Abbiamo Bisogno Di Sognare In Due Modi

Visits: 262 Nelle prime tre serie ho preferito il Dr House. Poi il personaggio è diventato prigioniero di sè stesso, manieristico, e il tentativo di rianimarlo insufflandovi escamotage ed espedienti era troppo trasparente per non essere destinato al fallimento. Si vedeva arrivare da lontano l' ultima stagione.  
 
Nelle prime serie, rimane tuttavia esemplare nell' aver tratteggiato una figura di outsider che (non si sa come) riesce ad aggiudicarsi un primariato e ad operare con una spregiudicatezza intellettuale che si integrava benissimo con una travolgente passione umana dissimulata sotto la veste di un ateismo che si percepiva più subìto dal personaggio che promosso.  
 
Grey's Anatomy è un tentativo di trasporre parte di quel bagaglio in uno schema corale. Essendo tale, manierismo e stanchezza impendono meno minacciosi: le problematiche man mano che le si incontra le si può spalmare su più personaggi, e così ammortizzarle anzichè farle tutte gravare sulle spalle di un unico ranger triste y final.  
 
Per coloro cui piacciono i giochi di squadra, Grey sarà ancora una volta fonte di ispirazione. E' sempre bello vedere arrivare la cavalleria, anche quando perde.  
 
Ma ci manca il cavaliere solitario, l'eroe misconosciuto. Dovranno pure inventarsi qualcosa (se non un eroe, un antieroe almeno) per coloro che più che al rugby e alla majorettes danzanti su campi spaziosi, si appassionano alla palestra desertificata e scalcinata dove il perdente intento ad un melanconico shadow-boxing incontra infine il suo unico sabato di vera gloria, magari finanche nella disfatta.  
Abbiamo bisogno di sognare in due modi.
