Medicine For Free And For Nothing

What does medicine cure?
We are still relying on the two majors leaps ahead: antibiotics and vaccines - and for the latter we haven't them for every virus. For the rest, to be honest, the panorama looks grim and we invariably seem to be in the field of the palliative.

Surgeries still today have a barbaric tone - hopefully, one hundred years from now, that some body may have an organ explanted and someone else his organ implanted, that we cut and throw away, that we place iron and steel and rubber within a body, and then we subject patients to be under immunosuppression a whole life, may look an absurdity.

For tumors the chemiotherapies we have do nearly nothing but worsen your condition, that is: they put you in the most disagreeable limbo of a too often merely postponed catastrophe.

For cardiac diseases, we still haven't a real cure: we make transplants, we place pacemakers, or we perform cardioversions that most of the times fail: are we moving by trials and errors?

Our medicine lacks some fundamental understanding - as Nick Lane * too hoped, we'd find a cure that cures all in one strike, and he considers that exactly the greatest step forward after antibiotics, thus implicitly agreeing that since then no major solutions have been put forth.

If it weren't for antibiotics we wouldn't be that much different from middle ages doctors probing a corpse.
We'd need a Pasteur, a Leonardo da Vinci, a Copernicus, a Galileo Galilei, an Einstein of medicine: somebody that, out of academical circuits, may think hard enough with fantasy enough and courage enough to understand that the solution is in thinking big theory and not in thinking small and then spend the next two years seeking for a confirmation of a petty idea by microscoping, rather than thinking, grand enough.
