Depression And The Fast Food Of Happiness: The Smiling Prick
Preview
: Depression, like many other things, can be denied and pushed into the unconscious. It operates from there then, but the person is unaware. Perhaps it could be added that depression is not necessarily a negative thing. For too many meeting the soul is something that must be avoided at all costs. Grief? It must/can be narcotized. Melancholy? It must/can be met with diversions. Depression? it must/can be addressed with pills. Desperation? it must/can be stigmatized. Thoughts or concerns? they must/can be dispelled. Thus happiness becomes a fast food populated of hypocrites and stoned dudes. And once we've arrived at this point, what is left there of a psychology? A prick, smiling....

Parole Di Mistici Sufi, Di Farid ad-din Attar: Un Po' Siamo Anche Angeli
Preview

Slaves To The Rhythm And To The Arhythm
Preview
: "When a man strikes his slave so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property." Exodus@21:20-21 The problem with that passage, which reveals it could not be meant as a practical or literal prescription, stays with its conclusion. That alleged ownership rights may be fully acknoweledged provided death ensues after a few days, and {yet} are acknowledged {no} longer if death ensues without delay, is clearly so nonsensical a conclusion, that it may have not escaped even whatever half wit: if I own something, the fact it is no more tomorrow rather than today can in itself found no discrimination; thus, such conclusion in the above mentioned passage ought to have been highly suggestive, if not even downright probatory (rather than obscure), that the prescription could in no way be meant at its face value lest entering unbridgeable contradi...

All Devils Are Women But No Women Are Devils
Preview
: Whenever you meet a devil (in human form or not) remember this: he is a female. Beware: this does {not} mean that women are devils: don't be so obtuse! It only means that devils, when they are true devils, are also necessarily female, yet the other way round is not necessitated or predicated or implied in the least. If you cannot understand this, you won't understand either that devils need, indeed, to be women in order to be devils too. Yet women need {not} to be devils too, in order to be women. It's so easy to understand that I never fail to wonder how so many erroneously inferred the latter from the former. Women have no need to conceal their being women, and that's why they are no devils; but devils do, and that's how you can tell 'em. So, if facing a devil you manage to keep in mind he is actually a female, you cannot fail from overcoming him, though his malice will be exactly that of making you forget he is female, and this is why so frequently he appears in male garb: for your...

Find Ali Or Die!
Preview
: Ali spared his best punch on Foreman falling, for Ali, knowing how to rope a dope, also knew that inflicting unnecessary damage was not the thing to do. In a sentence which may be the best (and possibily most moving) tribute to Ali I have ever heard, Foreman himself says it in the first seconds of the following movie: «Probably the best punch of the whole fight, was never landed. Mohammed Ali, as I was going down, he saw me stumbling. Ordinarily, you finish a fighter off - I would have! He got ready to throw the right hand and he didn't do it. That's what made him in my mind the greatest fighter I ever fought.» http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEmmHzQ_Oq0 °A stunning trailer. Alternative location: http://www.facingalimovie.com/ ° You know it's weird so many fans wanted to be like Ali. But Leon Spinks was right: "You cannot imitate (how he dances). You better leave that alone!" The fact is, y...

The Musicians Within The Music Box And Other Hereafter Stories
Preview
: [The Musicians Within The Music Box] «Either heaven objectively exists or it does not» Well, not really so: it may exist, but... subjectively. It is a common misunderstanding to apply to heaven (I prefer the term afterlife) the category of objectivity. Currently there is simply no way to determine in any scientific fashion wether an afterlife exists: so I am fine if you say it doesn't. Even the term afterlife rings heinous to a few, but the fact is: we sorely lack a better term. So we must grin and bear the fact that by the inadequate term "afterlife" we may be nonetheless dealing with a potential scientific paradigm whose contours we are still unable to define and comprehend properly. And the reason we miss a better term is that we miss something even more substantial than words: we miss the right metaphor, upon which the right words can thrive and be ultimately and convincingly established. We need an amphibious metaphor that may ignit...

Religion Relegation And Intelligence
Preview
: ps Latin: lego, legis, legi, lectum, legere: to bind, to connect, to read (!) religio, from Latin religio, religionis: re-lego: I bind together, or: I read between the lines, I... connect the dots intelligence from Latin intellego: inter-lego: I bind together, or: I read between the lines, I... connect the dots Religion and intelligence, under an etymological point of view, are fundamentally one same thing. The difference may be subtle: re-lego in modern Italian (the most direct derivation from ancient Latin) means also: relegare namely to relegate, and also rilegare namely to glue the pages into a book. Therefore re-ligio is a way to see things and merely collect them. Inter-lego instead seems to suggest the idea of an intervention of human creativity: I do not merely get the pages that nature gives to me in order to create a digest, but I invent a digest of my own, I contribute with my connections. Fundamentally, r...

Universities Are Churches: They Really Are
Preview
: (...) noticed similarities between college and church (...)It is not that they are just similar - in the beginning they were nearly identical. University is a term of the XII century, shortand from the Latin "universitas societas" (which immediately brings to the mind the idea of medicina catholica whereas catholica was a synonym for "universal") and in the beginning the main subject was... theology. Law came into being as a subject of study because there was the example of the Roman Empire which made it seem another possibily natural subject. Before Universities, teaching was made either with private tutors (for the wealthy) or in monasteries. Although universities were a way to disengage from that setting, it is also obvious and apparent that such was their starting point: an alternative monastery. Your perception is not only accurate: it is accurate because this is exactly what Universities were. That legacy, somehow, lives on a...

Il Signor Rossi Va A CinecittÃ
Preview

Preview
